SHORTS UP / BUCHAREST / CALL FOR ENTRIES

Hello,
I am Alexandra from *ShortsUP*, a monthly thematic event from Bucharest
created by the founders of Future Shorts Romania together with the founders
of Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) that wants to help
Romanians fall in love with short film.
Besides the annual festivals, there is no place in Romania where the large
audience can gather to watch short films. And the short films are made for
the big screen and deserve a large public, too. This is why we created *
ShortsUP* - the short film experience. Every month, we want to gather around
2 hours of high quality short films from all times on a certain theme. Our
plan is to attract people to attend the screening and around that to
recreate scenes from films.
On 31st October we had a great success - almost 1 000 people came to the
event *Remembering the Golden Age* where the seven shorts by Cristian Mungiu
and our installations recreated the communism atmosphere. The theme for the
November event is *Green Screen* and we prepare to show the best shorts ever
made, around the world, on environmental problems. The audience will decide
which is the best from the best green films.
The call for entry for the next three events is already opened.
The films can be from any year, it doesn't matter when was it made. Films
from all times, that fit the monthly theme. The screening will be in a
digital format.
Address for films (don't forget to give us your contact near the DVD):
Asociatia Oricum
128 Iancului st., bl G1, 5th floor, ap. 22
Bucharest, 2nd District, Romania
Help Romanians fall in love with short films!
Please contact me for any question and let me know if you are interested to
screen films at our event.
Keep in touch!
Kind regards,
Alexandra Safriuc

Ton van Zantvoort wint EU OSHA AWARD
52nd INTERNATIONAL LEIPZIG FESTIVAL
FOR DOCUMENTARY AND ANIMATED FILM
26 October to 1 November 2009
The Jury for the Healthy Workplaces Film Award awards for the best documentary film
about the subject of work the Healthy Workplaces Film Award along with € 8 000
granted by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU OSHA) to the film
A Blooming Business by Ton van Zantvoort (The Netherlands)
EU OSHA is the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, who grants the award.
Safety and health at work were much less visibile in the other films we had to see.
Nearly always, we saw work in radical situations, or as pure survival.
"we find the documentary A BLOOMING BUSINESS worthy of the EU OSHA AWARD.
We follow Jane and the women from flower farms in Kenya, who work with no social rights, using very danger
chemicals, without any protection on their day-to-day life, raising flowers to be imported to The Netherlands.
The work in the flower farms not only affects the workers, but also has enormous effects on the entire
surroundings: hurting the fish and fishermen, and polluting the water of the lake.
Being a single mother, Jane – the protagonist – has no choice but to provide for her four young children, even in
the price of having sex with her supervisor. What on the surface seems to be a voyage in a pastoralist scenery,
evidently becomes a nightmare, and the viewer is gradually exposed to the misery of the workers, as well as to
the grave consequences of globalisation. Despite the fact that the film’s structure is simple, it has a very
shocking effect on the viewer. Passing by the flower market yesterday here in Leipzig, we couldn’t avoid
thinking about the origin of European flowers made in Kenya. And if you happen to see a bouquet that costs
less than 2 Euros, please be suspicious..."
